Pressure boosting more essential than daily bread: Lawmaker

SHANA (Tehran) – The deputy chairman of the Energy Committee of the Iranian Parliament emphasized the importance of pressure boosting in the South Pars gas field, stating that it is "more essential than daily bread."

Ramezanali Sangdovini, referencing the $17 billion investment in the South Pars pressure boosting project, noted that over 95% of industrial, commercial, and residential sectors rely on natural gas, making it the country’s primary strategic fuel. This dependence on gas is critical not only for domestic energy supply but also for meeting export demands.

Sangdovini highlighted that South Pars supplies more than 75% of the country’s energy, underscoring the importance of maintaining and preserving gas fields during their operational lifespan. Pressure boosting, he said, is a top priority as it not only helps conserve energy resources but also increases gas production capacity and reduces reliance on energy imports.

The lawnaker stressed that without pressure boosting, the field would be lost, making it an issue of utmost importance—so much so that some consider it "more essential than daily bread." He urged that pressure boosting should be the top priority for the Ministry of Oil and the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC).

Sangdovini pointed out that the Seventh Development Plan addresses pressure boosting, emphasizing the need for private sector collaboration with the government. He called on the NIOC to leverage private sector capacity and investment, while the National Development Fund should support investors through financing.

He concluded by stating that strengthening the private sector is key to the country’s salvation, as it can significantly contribute to the economy, employment, and investment, helping Iran overcome its current economic challenges. Active private sector participation, he added, can enhance productivity and reduce costs in energy projects.
