BRICS Digital Center opens as Iran backs deeper energy cooperation

SHANA (Tehran) — Iran’s Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad on Thursday welcomed the launch of the BRICS Digital Center of Excellence (DCoE) for Smart Grid and Energy Storage, describing it as a practical platform to strengthen technical cooperation, innovation and knowledge-sharing among member states.

Speaking at the official inauguration ceremony during the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting in Gurugram, Paknejad said the new center represents a significant step forward in expanding energy cooperation among BRICS countries.

Addressing ministers and delegates, the Iranian oil minister thanked the Indian government and people for hosting the meeting and praised the organization of the event.

Paknejad said the center could help advance several strategic objectives, including enhancing energy security, promoting technology transfer and capacity building, supporting energy transition efforts while maintaining affordable and reliable energy access, strengthening South-South cooperation, and creating new opportunities for energy-producing and exporting countries.

He noted that varying levels of technological development among BRICS members make the initiative particularly important, as it can help bridge technology gaps and accelerate the deployment of modern energy infrastructure across participating nations.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the establishment of the BRICS Digital Center as a practical platform for strengthening technical cooperation, fostering innovation, enhancing capacity building and facilitating knowledge exchange among BRICS member states,” Paknejad said.

He added that the initiative demonstrates the collective commitment of BRICS countries to expand practical cooperation in the energy sector and develop innovative solutions to challenges facing the global energy system.

On behalf of the Iranian government, Paknejad commended India and other participating member states for their efforts in bringing the project to fruition.

The inauguration ceremony was held on the sidelines of the BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting, where member states are discussing energy cooperation, sustainable development and shared priorities in the sector. The Digital Center of Excellence is expected to serve as a collaborative hub for smart grid technologies, energy storage solutions and technical expertise among BRICS nations.
