Iran, India discuss broadening energy ties

SHANA (Tehran) — Iran’s Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad and India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation in the oil and gas sector during a meeting on the sidelines of the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting on Thursday.

Paknejad met with Puri on the second day of his visit to India and emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi in the energy sector, according to the Iranian Oil Ministry.
India was among the largest importers of Iranian crude oil before US sanctions led Indian refiners to halt purchases from Iran in 2019.
Since then, oil-sector cooperation has declined significantly. However, Tehran and New Delhi have continued discussions on broader energy collaboration and the use of strategic infrastructure and trade capacities, including the Chabahar Port.
The ministers reviewed opportunities for enhancing cooperation in oil and gas and explored avenues for expanding bilateral engagement in the energy sector.
