Parliament to help Oil Ministry tackle flare gas recovery challenges

SHANA (Tehran) – The head of the Energy Committee of the Parliament stated that a working group comprising members of the Energy and Article 90 committees will oversee the quality and progress of flare gas recovery efforts by the Oil Ministry officials.

Mousa Ahmadi added that the commissions will assist in resolving issues such as the import of necessary equipment or securing funding for the ministry.

A joint meeting of the Energy and Article 90 committees of the Parliament was held on Sunday with the attendance of Hamid Bovard, CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company, to review contracts related to flare gas collection.

Ahmadi, explaining the topics discussed during the meeting, said: "Since the development of the South Pars gas field, one of the persistent concerns of national officials has been the flaring of gas and its recovery. Due to reasons such as the urgent need to operationalize the gas field and insufficient facilities, unfortunately, efforts to prevent gas flaring were neglected. This issue has been specifically addressed in the Seventh Development Plan, and governments are now obligated to collect flare gas."

He added: "The NIOC and NIGC have now taken proper steps to collect associated gas and have signed good contracts with the private sector for this purpose. Therefore, a joint meeting was held to review the details of these contracts."

The MP emphasized: "Although this issue (flare gas recovery) has been legislated in development plans, it has been neglected for various reasons, such as not being a priority for some governments or lacking the necessary resources. However, all officials are now determined to address this issue."

Ahmadi highlighted the outcomes and resolutions of the meeting, stating: "It was decided that, based on reports provided by officials and experts, a working group consisting of members from the Energy and Article 90 committees will be formed to monitor the performance and progress of the Oil Ministry officials. If they encounter issues such as importing necessary equipment or securing funding, the commissions will assist in removing these obstacles."
