Pezeshkian calls for reforming energy consumption to become shared responsibility

SHANA (Tehran) – President Massoud Pezeshkian said excessive consumption of gas and electricity puts a lot of pressure on the supply network, warning that “If we do not conserve, we may be forced to cut off gas supplies in winter.”

"Reforming consumption patterns must become a shared responsibility," he stated.

Speaking on Monday at the first joint meeting of cabinet members and provincial governors under the 14th administration, the president stressed the importance of optimizing energy consumption and managing resources effectively.

"We must avoid cutting off gas or electricity to production units, as this would halt national production and trigger economic and social crises," Pezeshkian said.

Instead, he called for efforts to promote energy efficiency and foster a culture of responsible consumption.

Highlighting the nation's current energy challenges, Pezeshkian warned, "Excessive use of gas and electricity is placing immense pressure on the supply network. If we fail to conserve energy, we may face gas outages in the winter. Such a scenario is not only irrational but also carries significant social and economic consequences."

The president warned that shutting down energy supplies to production facilities would worsen unemployment and deepen social issues.

"When production stops, workers lose their jobs, and managing the resulting challenges becomes even more difficult," he said.

Pezeshkian stressed the critical role of the public in managing the energy crisis, urging households and offices to adopt stricter energy management practices.

"This year, if we can mitigate the crisis through conservation, we can improve conditions for the future by expanding infrastructure such as solar panels, wind energy, and new power plants," he noted.

Drawing on global best practices, Pezeshkian remarked, "In many developed countries, facilities and equipment are designed to ensure energy efficiency. Unfortunately, our consumption habits still lag behind these standards.”

He went on to say that, “For instance, luxury hotels worldwide use systems that minimize electricity and gas usage, yet we continue to rely on energy-intensive chandeliers at home, even when they are not needed."

The president concluded by underscoring the need for cultural change in energy use. "We must show people that excessive energy consumption not only depletes the nation's resources but also affects their own lives. Reforming this culture is essential, and we are responsible for guiding the public toward this path through effective policymaking."
