Iran Gas Export to Baghdad to Begin in 2018

TEHRAN, July 02 (Shana) -- An Iranian gas official said Iran's natural gas exports to the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, will begin in 2018.

Planning Director of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Hassan Montazer Torbat told Shana that all phases of a gas delivery pipeline to transfer Iranian natural gas to Iraq will sew up in two years.

He further said a gas export pipeline to the Iraqi city of Basra is also under construction through Khorramshahr border.

Gas exports to Basra will be done through an offshoot of Gas Trunkline VI (IGAT 6) at 7mcm/d which could increase to 40 mcm/d, said the official.

In October 2015, NIGC and the Iraqi Ministry of Power singed a 6-year deal for export of Iranian gas to Iraq.

Part of the gas to Iraq will be used for generation of gas to address some of the country's electricity troubles.

Iraq is facing serious load-shedding and Iranian companies are operating 33 megaprojects, worth $1.5 billion, in Iraq for the time being.
