Gov’t stresses public transport expansion to cut fuel consumption

SHANA (Tehran) – Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani emphasized the expansion of public transportation and urban rail infrastructure, particularly in Tehran, as part of efforts to reduce gasoline consumption, saying unnecessary fuel use and single-occupancy vehicle travel are examples of wasteful consumption.

Speaking on Saturday, Mohajerani referred to last week’s specialized meeting between President Masoud Pezeshkian and the oil minister, saying the president assigned two major tasks to the Oil Ministry. The first was prioritizing natural gas allocation to productive and wealth-generating sectors, and the second was designing a provincial quota and allocation system based on the actual needs of each region to ensure stable energy management for the country’s strategic and vital sectors.

She said discussions during the meeting also focused on gasoline consumption and other energy carriers, stressing that unnecessary fuel use and reliance on single-passenger vehicles represent inefficient consumption patterns.

Mohajerani added that the government is fully aware of the need to expand infrastructure in the sector and is committed to developing public transportation and rail systems in major cities, especially Tehran.

Last week, President Pezeshkian, during a meeting with senior officials of the Oil Ministry, underscored the importance of promoting public transportation culture. He said fuel consumption must be reduced so that savings generated from lower gasoline imports and unnecessary fuel use can instead be directed toward improving livelihoods, strengthening support systems and providing assistance for low-income groups.
