Gasoline conservation an unavoidable necessity for Iran: President

SHANA (Tehran) – President Masoud Pezeshkian said gasoline conservation has become an unavoidable necessity for the country, stressing that public cooperation in managing fuel consumption would help Iran maintain stability without major disruptions.

Speaking Sunday at a meeting on fuel consumption management and strengthening the resilience of Iran’s fuel supply network under wartime conditions, Pezeshkian called for immediate and effective measures to control energy use.

According to president.ir, the meeting was attended by Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad, senior economic officials and energy sector representatives.

Pezeshkian said Iran must prioritize consumption management to improve national resilience and withstand external pressures and economic warfare. He added that the government is using all available resources to stabilize the economy and safeguard people’s livelihoods through economic diplomacy, coordination with neighboring countries and regular consultations with producers, distributors and trade groups.

The president emphasized the importance of transparency with the public, saying officials should present the realities of the country’s economic challenges honestly without creating despair or portraying conditions as entirely normal.

He also defended the government’s handling of the economy, saying efforts by state institutions had so far been acceptable and satisfactory, despite external pressures and wartime conditions.

Pezeshkian outlined several non-price measures aimed at reducing gasoline consumption, including revising fuel quotas, cutting allocations for high-income and heavy-consuming users, intensifying oversight of fuel distribution, combating fuel smuggling, encouraging public transportation use and reducing unnecessary private vehicle travel.

He said gasoline imports and supply currently face limitations, but added that public cooperation in reducing unnecessary consumption would allow the country to manage conditions smoothly.

The meeting also reviewed gasoline consumption trends, strategic fuel reserves and scenarios for maintaining stable fuel supplies under special conditions.
