Iranian gas industry over the past year

SHANA (Tehran) – The gas industry experienced many ups and downs in the year 1403 (2024-2025), navigating challenges from supply to development.

The year concluded with the industry not only maintaining network stability and supplying gas under difficult conditions but also advancing development efforts to strengthen Iran’s energy sector.

Natural gas coverage reached over 95% of the population, the number of subscribers increased, and the industry effectively managed seasonal challenges.

This report reviews the most significant events in Iran’s gas industry in 1403.

 First quarter: Expanding gas infrastructure 

- Iran’s gas export contract with Iraq was extended for five years on March 27, 2024. Under the agreement, export volumes will vary between peak and off-peak seasons.

- The Saba Combined Cycle Power Plant in Dehloran was connected to the metering station pipeline at the zero border point on April 17, preparing for electricity production.

- The National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) and the Oil Industry Research and Technology Fund signed a cooperation agreement on May 8 to collaborate on investments, domestic manufacturing projects, knowledge-based initiatives, and innovation hubs.

- The domestically designed IGT30 turbine was unveiled on May 9. Optimized for southern Iran’s climate, it delivers 3 additional megawatts of power with lower fuel consumption.

- Natural gas reached nine cities and 130 villages in Sistan and Baluchestan Province on June 5.

- Five gas pressure boosting stations officially launched on June 6, increasing national gas transmission capacity.

 Second quarter: Expanding int’l cooperation 

- A strategic gas transit agreement between Iran and Russia was signed on June 25, positioning Iran as a regional energy hub and boosting its role in regional gas trade.

- Gas savings certificates began trading on the Energy Exchange on July 1. NIGC offered 25 million cubic meters of peak and 25 million cubic meters of off-peak gas in the first phase.

- A memorandum was signed on July 2 to replace 1 million inefficient heaters with high-efficiency models.

- The "Ardabil-Germi" gas pipeline launched on August 13 with 141 trillion rials in investment, ensuring stable gas supply to remote border areas.

- A gas cooperation agreement between Iran and Turkmenistan was signed on August 27.

 Third quarter: Consumption management 

- The Abpakhsh gas pressure boosting station launched on September 27 on the sixth national gas pipeline, with a daily capacity of 107 million cubic meters and four 25-megawatt MGT-30 turbines.

-3,000 tons of lump sulfur from the Shahid Hasheminejad Gas Refinery were offered on the Iran Mercantile Exchange on September 31.

- The "Gas Assistant" initiative launched in Tehran schools on October 6 to promote safe and efficient gas usage among students.

- Gas supply to five villages in Eastern Alamut began on October 11, raising rural household gas coverage in Qazvin Province to around 95%.

- A gas consumption monitoring program for government offices and public spaces in Tehran Province started on October 28 to optimize usage.

- Major repairs on the third sulfur recovery unit at the South Pars Refinery 9 concluded on November 8, reducing daily flare gas emissions by 760 tons.

- A smart gas meter production line launched on November 24 with a multi-million-dollar investment for domestic technology transfer.

- A cooperation agreement to reduce household and commercial gas and electricity consumption by 10% was signed on December 18 between NIGC and the National Petrochemical Company.

 Fourth quarter: Record gas production amid unprecedented cold 

- Despite high demand during an unusually cold winter, Iran set consecutive records in sweet gas production and delivery, peaking at 880 million cubic meters on February 1. Household and commercial consumption reached 703 million cubic meters per day.

- On January 6, over 65 million cubic meters of gas were extracted from Khangiran wells, with 58.042 million cubic meters processed and sent to transmission lines, setting a new production record.

- The South Pars Gas Complex launched an LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair) camera system on January 14 to reduce pollution and meet environmental regulations.

- Sweet gas production at the Parsian Refinery reached nearly 14 billion cubic meters by January 19, an 11% increase year-over-year.

- The Hot Tap 2460 device was used for the first time in Iran on February 8 in Gas Transmission Area 3.

- Gas injection into the Minab-Sirik pipeline (kilometers 90-120) was completed on February 18, making the entire 120-kilometer line operational. The pipeline supplies gas to Minab, Sirik, the Gurok industrial zone, and the Kuhstak power plant.

- Gas injection into 50 kilometers of the 30-inch "Bandar Abbas-Laft-Gorzin" pipeline and the 16-inch Persian Gulf Industrial Town branch was completed on February 26.
