South Pars contributes $100b to Iran’s GDP

SHANA (Tehran) – The CEO of Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) highlighted the significant role of South Pars in Iran’s economy and national security, stating that the field contributes $100 billion annually to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Touraj Dehqani emphasized that the Islamic Revolution, now nearly half a century old, continues to thrive by leveraging such vast capacities.

Speaking on the 46th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, Dehqani noted that while the initial phases of the South Pars field were developed by international companies, subsequent phases were primarily advanced by Iranian firms. Domestic experts have spearheaded gas well drilling, offshore platform construction and installation, refinery establishment, and operational activities.

Dehqani pointed out that in the face of international sanctions over the past decades, Iran increasingly relied on domestic capabilities. Iranian companies gradually gained expertise in field development, refinery construction, well drilling, and platform building.

Offshore gas field development through domestic capacity

The CEO of Pars Oil and Gas Company cited the development of domestic oil industry capabilities as one of the Islamic Revolution’s greatest achievements. He stated that the company, responsible for developing the massive South Pars field, will continue to advance other offshore fields using national resources, which represent a significant national asset.

Dehqani highlighted the development of offshore fields such as Kish, North Pars, Farzad A and B, and Belal, as well as the South Pars gas pressure enhancement project, as top priorities for the company.

He stressed the need to rely on domestic capabilities while strategically utilizing foreign expertise to reduce project timelines and costs.

Record-breaking gas production

Dehqani noted that much of Pars Oil and Gas Company’s activities in recent years have focused on the development and production of the South Pars field. Recently, a record daily gas production of 715 million cubic meters was achieved through the efforts of South Pars employees.

He emphasized that this gas is extracted from 39 offshore platforms, over 300 wells, and 13 refineries across 24 phases, supplying more than 70% of the country’s gas consumption. Additionally, over 40% of gasoline production capacity and nearly 50% of feedstock for petrochemical plants and power plants come from this shared field.

Responding to public trust

Dehqani underscored the importance of identifying strengths and weaknesses and learning from shortcomings. While the oil industry has achieved numerous milestones since the Islamic Revolution, he cautioned against overlooking deficiencies, as addressing weaknesses can help the industry overcome challenges and chart a clearer path for the country’s economy.

He praised the Iranian people for their resilience and understanding of realities, stating that government officials must respond to their trust with maximum effort, wisdom, and prudence. By working alongside the people, he expressed confidence in overcoming challenges and building a brighter future for the nation.
