Successful execution of second nanofluid injection pilot at Belal field

SHANA (Tehran) – The second pilot injection of nanofluid, produced by the Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI), was successfully conducted at well BL-1P in the Belal oil field with the support of the Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC).

The operation's effectiveness in altering the wettability of the reservoir rock was confirmed by the Research and Technology Department of the National Iranian Oil Company.

The nanofluid injection pilot was carried out as part of the second phase of a project aimed at developing the technical expertise to produce suitable nanofluids for enhanced oil recovery from reservoirs.

The operation spanned 11 days, with a daily injection of 1,000 barrels of nanofluid using the Huff and Puff method. This single-stage method involved re-initiating production at well BL-1P using a downhole pump after completing the nanofluid injection.

Following an evaluation of the formulation and injection process of the nanofluid produced by the RIPI, the injected nanofluid's performance in altering the wettability of the reservoir rock in the Sormeh formation of the Belal field was approved by the Research and Technology Department of the National Iranian Oil Company.

The continuation of this project, aimed at the sustained injection of nanofluid in other fields under the National Iranian Oil Company's supervision, is under review.

Previously, during the first phase of the project, 18,000 barrels of nanofluid were injected and evaluated in one of the wells in the Belal field in May 2021 to assess the injectability of nanofluid in the reservoir.

These steps mark significant progress in the development of advanced technologies to enhance the productivity of the country's oil reservoirs.
