Special measures needed to ensure gas network stability during cold days

SHANA (Tehran) – The CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) stated that with the forecast of an intense cold wave and widespread frost from upcoming Saturday to Tuesday, ensuring the stability of the country's gas network requires special measures to mitigate the adverse effects of these weather conditions.

Saeid Tavakoli, speaking at the 26th meeting of the Domestic Winter Fuel Committee via video conference on Tuesday, attended by headquarters managers and provincial gas company executives, said: "Based on forecasts, the weighted average temperature from Saturday to Tuesday next week is expected to reach around 1 degree Celsius."

He noted that all provinces are expected to experience sub-zero temperatures next week, adding: "These weather conditions, coupled with increased gas consumption in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors—projected to exceed 690 million cubic meters per day and reach around 720 million cubic meters per day—could significantly impact energy consumption and daily activities."

The deputy oil minister for gas affairs emphasized that this situation is not limited to just one or two days, stating: "According to forecasts, this severe and persistent cold will not subside quickly. Therefore, I urge all colleagues in the provinces to implement the communicated decisions without any hesitation or delay."

Tavakoli warned that even the slightest disruption could affect the northern, northwestern, and northeastern regions of the country, particularly Khorasan Razavi.

He added: "Given the severe cold ahead, our winter conditions will reach their most challenging and prolonged state. During a meeting with the Oil Minister, several key strategies were discussed to manage this crisis related to the NIGC."

He further stressed the need for increased periodic inspections and oversight, especially for government offices and vacation homes, while also emphasizing the importance of cultural initiatives to promote responsible consumption.

Boosting efficiency through system smartening

The official highlighted that the implementation of high-level directives by provincial organizations is another essential strategy in this regard. Provincial gas company executives, as representatives of the NIGC, are directly responsible for ensuring these measures are followed.

Tavakoli reiterated the importance of consumption management across all sectors, stating: "The stability of the gas network, particularly during this critical week, is of utmost importance to ensure no part of the country faces disruptions."

He emphasized that northern and northeastern provinces, including Azarbaijan, Khorasan, Golestan, Gilan, and Mazandaran, must manage the situation as an emergency. Gas consumption in these provinces must be strictly controlled, and alternative fuel supplies must be pursued with urgency.

The CEO of the NIGC noted that some provinces have deviated from imposed restrictions and stressed the need for provinces to reinstate previous limitations and fully implement new ones to control the network during this critical period.

Tavakoli also called for provincial gas companies to thoroughly inspect heating systems in boiler rooms during periodic visits. He warned that inadequate insulation, improper boiler room settings, and poor maintenance reflect a failure to adhere to the principles being promoted.

He emphasized the importance of regular maintenance and servicing to optimize energy system performance, noting that such measures not only prevent future issues but also reduce additional costs.

Tavakoli pointed out that some provinces have taken the lead in smartizing systems and implementing smart controls, which could serve as a model for others.

He added: "These measures not only reduce costs and increase efficiency but also prevent serious technical problems. Proper maintenance of boiler rooms and the smartization of energy systems must be prioritized."

He concluded by stressing the importance of monitoring the gas supply network, urging colleagues to take this matter seriously.

He also noted that CGS entry points must be closely monitored. Despite the challenging conditions, he expressed gratitude for the hard work and dedication of all colleagues, which has ensured the network's stability so far. "

You have all worked tirelessly, and your efforts are truly commendable. I hope God supports you in this journey, and you can overcome these difficult conditions with pride," he said.
