NIGC head stresses need for comprehensive energy plan

SHANA (Tehran) – The CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) highlighted the importance of implementing a comprehensive energy plan, describing the development of South Pars and gas distribution as the most significant achievements of the oil industry over the past 46 years.

Saeid Tavakoli, in outlining the major accomplishments of the oil industry during this period, stated that the development of South Pars and gas distribution have been the most notable achievements. Before the Islamic Revolution (1979), there was only one refinery and a main pipeline, which provided gas to nine cities, two villages, and a small portion of industries.

Tavakoli noted that gas distribution became a driver of development after the Islamic Revolution, preventing the burning of crude oil and the release of large amounts of carbon into the environment, thus playing a key role in environmental restoration.

He added that without the current level of gas distribution, forests would have been destroyed to meet fuel demands due to population growth, and oil would not have generated sufficient foreign currency revenue for the country.

The deputy oil minister cited the development of South Pars as another major achievement of the oil industry over the past four decades.

Despite Iran lagging behind Qatar in cumulative gas extraction, approximately 70% of the country's total gas supply comes from this field. Tavakoli emphasized that South Pars relies on the expertise of Iranian specialists and has focused on utilizing domestic capabilities, increasing knowledge, and transferring technology, particularly in high-tech sectors.

Regarding the most significant oversight in the oil industry over the past four decades, Tavakoli pointed to the over-reliance on gas in the energy mix. He stated, "If we had a comprehensive energy plan, we would not have depended on gas for more than 70% of the country's energy mix."

On future priorities, Tavakoli emphasized the need for a strategic industrial development plan.

He argued that industries should align with their specific conditions and positions based on a comprehensive industrial development strategy, incorporating various aspects such as energy, environment, water, and culture.
