Iran Eyes 70% Reduction in Gas Industry Emissions in 3 Years

TEHRAN (Shana) – An Iranian gas official says plans are under way to curb gas industry emissions by 70% within the next 3 years.

Speaking on the occasion of the World Environment Day, the head of the Health, Safety and Environment Unit (HSA) of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), announced the prevention of the industry’s emission by about 180 million tons in the previous Iranian calendar year which ended on March 20, adding plans are under way to further reduce the sector’s emissions by 70% in the next three years.

In an exclusive interview with Shana, Gholamreza Bahmannia, outlined the company’s latest measures to protect the environment.

He said the emission would be controlled in gas flares of South Pars gas field under 5 or 7-year schemes.

The NIGC official further underlined natural gas as the clearest fossil fuel compared to other hydrocarbons, saying the development of gas consumption and replacing it with heavier fossil fuels helps reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
