Iran, Russia near finalizing gas trade deal

SHANA (Tehran) — Iran and Russia are close to finalizing a long-negotiated gas trade agreement after reaching consensus on most of the contract's key provisions, oil minister said Monday.

Mohsen Paknejad said Tehran has asked Moscow to accelerate the signing of the final agreement, adding that the two sides have agreed on the contract's main terms and are working to complete the remaining details as soon as possible.

Speaking after a meeting with Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev, Paknejad said the talks reviewed progress on agreements reached during the 19th Iran-Russia Joint Economic Cooperation Commission held in February. Officials assessed implementation of 146 measures agreed upon by the two countries and discussed ways to remove remaining obstacles.

Paknejad said energy cooperation remained a central focus of the discussions, including Russian investment in Iran's oil and gas fields. The two sides also developed solutions to address outstanding issues affecting those projects.

He described the proposed gas trade agreement as one of the meeting's most significant topics, saying negotiations have made substantial progress in recent months.

According to Paknejad, only two provisions of the agreement remain unresolved and require further negotiations. He said both countries hope to complete the deal in the near future.
