The trip comes at the official invitation of Turkmenistan's president. Pezeshkian is set to attend and address two summits: one of the Commonwealth of Independent States and one on the environment of the Caspian Sea.

Before departing Thursday evening, Pezeshkian said he hoped talks with regional leaders would advance and achieve the Islamic Republic of Iran's goals and interests.

Caretaker Oil Minister Hamid Bovard is joining the delegation because of the economic and energy issues expected to feature in the regional meetings. These include energy cooperation and Iran's bilateral and multilateral relations with countries in the region.
