Gasoline price reform based on expert input: Veep

SHANA (Tehran) – Iran’s first vice president said the government’s gasoline price reform plan reflects a consolidation of expert opinions, the strategies outlined in the Seventh Development Plan and the president’s campaign and governing commitments.

According to fvpresident.ir, Mohammadreza Aref made the remarks Sunday during a market regulation meeting, stressing that the government’s primary concern is maintaining relative market stability while safeguarding people’s livelihoods and the prices of essential goods.

“We have been somewhat successful in this regard, but we must act more decisively to ensure the sustainable supply, production and sale of essential commodities and meet public needs,” Aref said.

Addressing the implementation of the gasoline price reform, he said there was no doubt about the need for the measure and that the public also supported the necessity of reform.

Aref said the psychological impact of price increases was given special consideration during meetings on the reform, adding that the relevant regulations were shared with experts before being approved by the government to collect their views and incorporate possible revisions.

Thanking the public for their cooperation, Aref said people once again demonstrated their trust in public servants. He noted that the highest level of public solidarity was seen in recent months during what he described as the 12-day imposed war. “We were confident of public support for implementing this plan, as people were well informed and cooperated effectively,” he said.

Aref said gasoline consumption typically reaches 150 million to 160 million liters per day during peak travel periods but rose to 195 million liters on June 24. He said consumption was expected to increase on the first day of the reform’s implementation but instead stood at 150 million liters, which he described as a sign of strong public cooperation.

He also thanked relevant agencies, including the Plan and Budget Organization, the Oil Ministry, the Interior Ministry, provincial governors and security and oversight bodies, for their role in implementing the plan.

Aref underscored the role of the media, praising state broadcaster IRIB for using experts, academics and field programs to explain the reform to the public.
