Waste-based fuel project approved to replace mazut in cement plants

SHANA (Tehran) — Iran’s Economic Council approved a project to produce and use fuel derived from municipal waste as a substitute for mazut and natural gas in cement factories, the country’s first vice president announced Monday.

According to fvpresident.ir, Mohammadreza Aref said during the fifth meeting of the Economic Council in 1404 that the plan aligns with environmental protection goals and efforts to curb air pollution. The session was attended by the ministers of oil, roads and urban development, energy, and agriculture; the government spokesperson; the head of the Plan and Budget Organization; and other senior officials.

Aref said the council’s review and approval of four major national infrastructure and development projects in one session reflected the government’s unity, coordination, and cooperation across ministries.

He described the newly approved waste-derived fuel initiative as an environmentally responsible step and praised Isfahan Province’s success in separating dry and wet waste. He called on the national broadcaster, media, and cultural institutions to help promote waste segregation at the source among the public.

The vice president also noted that protecting the Zagros forests and collecting waste from the northern forests are two key environmental priorities of the 14th administration. He emphasized the need to resolve the decades-long waste management crisis in Iran’s three northern provinces, which has caused severe and lasting damage to the forests.
