Iran sets unprecedented gas transmission record in winter

SHANA (Tehran) – The CEO of Iran Gas Transmission Company highlighted multiple gas transmission records set in winter 1403, stating that the latest record—a daily transmission of 880 million cubic meters of gas—was unprecedented in the history of Iran's gas industry.

Speaking at the annual meeting of senior gas industry managers on Tuesday, attended by Saeid Tavakoli, deputy oil minister, Peyman Khazraei said: "Through collaboration with other stakeholders and relentless efforts, Iran Gas Transmission Company has played a major role in adding a golden and brilliant page to the achievements of the gas industry."

Khazraei noted that the company occupies a central position in the energy supply chain, serving as a critical link between production and distribution, with significant roles in both upstream and downstream natural gas sectors.

He added: "The company’s physical assets are vast and widespread, including 40,300 kilometers of high-pressure pipelines, 72 pipeline operation centers, 95 gas pressure boosting stations, 350 turbo-compressor units, and nine gas import/export terminals."

Referring to last winter’s two sudden, prolonged, and widespread cold waves, Khazraei said: "The extreme cold and surge in residential gas consumption forced us to take high-risk measures beyond standard technical limits and capacity at some pressure-boosting facilities and pipelines."

He outlined key actions taken, including:

- Operating 208 turbo-compressors simultaneously for the first time

- Running 20 gas pressure-boosting stations at full capacity

- Increasing gas transmission beyond capacity at facilities in Khonj, Kheirgou, and Jahrom

- Deploying 50 operational teams at intermediate valve stations

- Placing 10 operational regions on standby nationwide

- Optimizing network management and pressure-boosting station configurations

- Completing pre-winter maintenance and operational programs

Khazraei emphasized the record-breaking daily transmission of 880 million cubic meters of gas in 1403, calling it a historic milestone. He stressed that communication is the backbone of natural gas production, transmission, and distribution, noting that the company’s telecommunications and telemetry division manages National Iranian Gas Company’s infrastructure with 800 communication stations, 9,000 fiber-optic networks, and 4,000 kilometers of microwave networks.

The CEO also highlighted the company’s integration of HSE (health, safety, and environment) standards into maintenance and repair operations. Last year, 107,000 work permits were issued, and 23 million accident-free man-hours were recorded—a testament to employee dedication and high operational safety standards.

Khazraei pointed out that while Iran’s gas infrastructure—including pipelines, operational facilities, compressors, and transmission equipment—has grown by 20% to 70% over the past five years, the workforce has only increased by 15%, necessitating a serious review of the company’s organizational structure.

In closing, he thanked all employees in operational and administrative units for their round-the-clock, sincere, and tireless efforts to ensure the comfort of their fellow citizens.
