Oil industry drives Iran’s economy amid turbulence, sanctions

SHANA (Tehran) – The CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) highlighted the role of the oil industry in the country’s economy over recent decades, stating that for the past 46 years, the oil sector has been the driving force behind Iran’s economy and a lifeline for the Islamic Revolution during times of turmoil and sanctions.

Hamid Bovard emphasized the significant growth of Iran’s oil industry over the past 46 years. He noted that Iran has successfully developed various oil fields, including South Pars, Azadegan, Mansouri, and Nargesi, whereas before the revolution, the development of oil and gas fields was solely managed by foreign companies.

Additionally, he highlighted advancements in domestic manufacturing, such as the production of turbines, pumps, drills, and downhole completion tools.

Bovard added that in the final days of the Pahlavi regime, most heads of NIOC offices were Americans who, upon leaving their offices, claimed they would return. However, in the absence of foreign expertise, Iranian oil industry workers achieved remarkable feats, including drilling thousands of oil and gas wells.

Reflecting on the oil industry’s role in the post-revolution economy, Bovard stated that over the past 46 years, the sector has been the backbone of the country’s economy, serving as a critical lifeline during severe turbulence and sanctions. He noted that oil production and exports have remained stable and resilient, thanks to the dedication of industry workers.

Bovard acknowledged that sanctions have hindered investment in the oil sector but expressed optimism that implementing a series of measures could improve conditions.

He stressed the importance of greater independence for the oil industry, stating that the more autonomous the sector becomes in decision-making, the greater the revenue it will generate for the country.

He also pointed out that financial challenges have largely been due to sanctions and economic restrictions. However, through extensive efforts, some of these issues have been resolved, allowing the industry to continue on its development path.

Bovard emphasized that the Iranian people should know that the oil industry remains steadfast even in the toughest conditions, thanks to the hard work of Iranian engineers and workers. He expressed hope that with increased government and leadership support, the industry could achieve higher goals and pave the way for a brighter future.
