Gas Swap Deal, Result of Activating Asia-Based Economic Diplomacy

TEHRAN (Shana) – Head of the presidential office said that the recent gas swap deal between Iran, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan was the result of activating Asia-based economic diplomacy.

"Unfortunately, we had forgotten about neighboring countries in recent years, but today we see that Turkmen officials are welcoming the resolution of the Tehran-Ashgabat gas problem," said Gholamhossein Esmaili, on Saturday evening.

Speaking in a televised interview, he considered one of the general policies of the 13th administration to establish relations with other countries, activate diplomacy and pay attention to neighbors, and said: “In the fields of trade, energy, environment and the use of digital economy and its various platforms, and the fiber-optic relationship between the member countries of the organization and neighboring countries with each other were the approaches and goals of the President at the ECO Summit.”

He added: "In addition to the goals and programs on the agenda of the meeting, the views of the President led us to hold bilateral meetings with the presidents of the participating countries, including Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Uzbekistan."

The Head of the Office of the President continued: "In these bilateral meetings, issues such as the development of energy transportation relations, especially gas, were reviewed and good achievements were made in the field of security."

Ismaili added: "Unfortunately, in recent years we had forgotten about neighboring countries. The members present at this meeting regarded a good position for Iran and good agreements were reached. For example, Turkmen officials welcomed the gas problems between Iran and Turkmenistan to be solved."

He said: "The Republic of Azerbaijan has reached agreements to buy gas from Turkmenistan and swap it from Iran, and Iran will withdraw its share of gas, meaning that Tehran will not receive money for swaps in this contract."
