Masoud Pezeshkian, during an open session of Parliament on Sunday, defended the Minister of Economy and Finance, likening the country’s situation to a full-scale economic war.
He said, "We are in an economic war, just as the bombings during the Iraq war caused major problems. In such a situation, blaming each other will not resolve anything."
He added that in the healthcare sector alone, there was a debt of 90 trillion tomans, while the wheat sector faced a similar amount. In the electricity sector, the Energy Ministry owed 120 trillion tomans to power generation companies, and the Social Security Organization needed 130 trillion tomans in financial resources, which the government struggled to provide.
Addressing the issue of mazut consumption and power outages in some regions, the president stressed, "I never wanted to burn mazut or cut power to industries, but if such decisions had not been made, we would have been forced to cut off people’s gas supply during the winter cold. These decisions were made unwillingly and out of necessity. Change is a time-consuming process and cannot be achieved in six months. Additionally, as soon as Trump took office, he signed sanctions that caused our ships to face problems at sea."
Pezeshkian also highlighted the country’s financial constraints, noting that various countries, including Iraq, Qatar, and Turkey, have frozen Iran’s funds and refuse to release them. "While we have financial resources, accessing them is fraught with difficulties," he said.
