Lawmaker pushes renewables to cut fossil fuel reliance

SHANA (Tehran) – A Parliament energy committee member said renewable power plants, particularly solar and wind farms, make strong economic sense, adding that lawmakers have prioritized expanding the country's renewable energy portfolio to cut reliance on fossil fuels.

Mohammad Bahrami said managing energy supply during peak consumption seasons has become a top priority for parliament's energy committee. He said the committee formed a task force to address energy imbalances, strengthening its oversight and coordination role between the oil and energy ministries.

Bahrami said the task force takes rapid action to offset reduced capacity at damaged facilities and prevent blackouts or production restrictions at industrial plants and power stations. He described combined-cycle power plants as a core pillar of the country's energy strategy, citing their numerous advantages.

Higher efficiency and lower fuel consumption are among the key benefits of combined-cycle plants, Bahrami said, noting that this technology plays an important role in reducing energy intensity as Iran faces constraints on natural gas production.

Bahrami said expanding renewable power generation is one of the most cost-effective ways to ease pressure on the fossil fuel supply network. He noted that parliament, through provisions in the seventh national development plan and other overarching legislation, has emphasized growing the country's renewable energy mix to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
