Iran prioritizes energy efficiency, renewable power in reconstruction drive

SHANA (Tehran) — President Masoud Pezeshkian said energy demand management and improving energy efficiency are among Iran’s top strategic priorities as the government advances reconstruction plans following the recent conflict.

Speaking at a meeting of the national reconstruction headquarters, Pezeshkian said reducing energy intensity will require reforms to consumption patterns, expansion of renewable energy—particularly solar power—higher architectural standards and improved energy efficiency in buildings.

The meeting, attended by senior cabinet officials, reviewed a comprehensive reconstruction package focused on financing and spending priorities. The plan includes compensation for damage to homes, vehicles, industries and production facilities affected during the recent war. Officials also examined reports on natural gas production and consumption, damage to the country’s electricity infrastructure, and proposed reforms to gasoline pricing and fuel rationing.

Pezeshkian called for greater transparency and coordination in financing reconstruction efforts. He said active participation by automakers and their authorized dealer networks in repairing damaged vehicles could improve cost control, although implementation mechanisms still require further development.

The president stressed that reconstruction planning must be based on reliable, data-driven assessments of war damage. He called for provincial-level evaluations, continuous monitoring and reconstruction plans tailored to local priorities. Accurate damage assessments, he said, are essential for estimating costs, allocating resources and designing financing mechanisms.

He also warned that decisions on rebuilding industrial and manufacturing facilities must rely on verified field data. The government’s goal, he said, is to restore production capacity and help businesses resume operations. Officials who submit false information that disrupts policymaking will face legal action.

On energy policy, Pezeshkian urged provincial authorities and government agencies to promote more efficient energy use and public awareness campaigns. He also instructed relevant agencies, particularly the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, to curb electricity consumption by illegal cryptocurrency mining operations and take firm action against industrial facilities using unauthorized mining equipment.

The president said maintaining electricity supplies for industrial and manufacturing facilities should remain a priority and called for avoiding power outages that disrupt production. He said government policy should focus on expanding renewable energy capacity, improving building efficiency and encouraging more responsible energy consumption.

Pezeshkian also emphasized transparent communication about damage to the country’s natural gas infrastructure and called for stronger coordination among government agencies and community organizations to prepare for peak winter energy demand. He said public institutions should adopt training, engineering, incentive, enforcement and performance evaluation programs to improve energy management.

He said effective governance requires a clear understanding of policy challenges and pledged government support for managers who deliver successful results through responsible and efficient administration.

The president also called for revising laws and regulations that hinder production, saying the government aims to mobilize national resources, remove obstacles for businesses and improve productivity through greater cooperation among ministries.

In addition, he said Iran should strengthen regional energy cooperation with neighboring Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Turkey to enhance the country’s energy security.

Pezeshkian also urged faster implementation of gasoline rationing reforms and encouraged measures to reduce fuel consumption, including promoting public transportation, increasing production of hybrid and dual-fuel vehicles, and launching initiatives such as a “Car-Free Day” for government employees.
