Forouzan field wells move to remote control

SHANA (Tehran) — The Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC) is upgrading its Forouzan oil and gas field with a new remote-control system, allowing operators to secure offshore wells during emergencies without the need for on-site personnel.

Alireza Mota’ali, manager of the Kharg operational region, announced that the project will significantly enhance safety for both staff and equipment. Previously, operators were often forced to travel to remote satellite platforms to manually shut down wells during emergencies, a task often complicated by hazardous weather conditions and sea states.

"Because some of our satellite platforms lacked hydraulic control panels and adequate power infrastructure, our teams had to be physically present to shut down wells, which involved significant risks," Mota’ali said.

The project, which began in late 2024 following technical and economic feasibility studies, utilizes telecommunications equipment, solar power systems, and backup batteries to operate sub-surface safety valves (SSSV) and surface safety valves (SSV) remotely.

After successful pilot testing of a prototype, IOOC teams manufactured the necessary chassis and control panels in-house. According to the company, several satellite platforms have already been integrated into the system, with work ongoing to equip the remaining wells.

Once the project is fully operational later this year, it will provide centralized control for all satellite platform wells. Officials say the upgrade not only improves disaster response times but also provides a cost-effective solution for managing offshore infrastructure in the Persian Gulf.
