TEHRAN – Iran will boost quality of its gasoline by taking advantage of naphtha isomerization units at domestic refineries.
Official in charge of naphtha isomerization units at Research Institute for Petroleum Industry told Petroenergy Information Network that octane number of light naphtha is about 70 and isomerization will change linear paraffin in naphtha to branched paraffin, thus increasing octane number of gasoline to about 90.
Khaleqi Nasab added that adding products of isomerization process to gasoline will produce a gasoline which will not be carcinogenic and will also boost quality of gasoline to the level of Euro 2005 standard.
“We need 12 billion dollars in new investment for developing quality of refinery products and construction of naphtha isomerization units is a step toward increasing quality of gasoline,” he noted.
The official stated that average rate of gasoline production from crude oil stands at 25.73 percent but the figure is 16.43 percent in Iran.
Khaleqi Nasab stated that isomerization units can be established at Arak, Tehran, Isfahan, Tabriz, Shiraz, Abadan, Lavan and Bandar Abbas refineries.
