Five provinces account for 40% of Iran's gasoline consumption

SHANA (Tehran) – Five Iranian provinces – Tehran, Khorasan Razavi, Fars, Isfahan and Kerman – were identified as the country's largest consumers of gasoline, using more than 5 billion liters in the summer, accounting for 40% of the nation's total consumption.

During the three-month summer period, these provinces had the highest consumption rates, with Tehran using 1.884 billion liters, Khorasan Razavi 869.5 million liters, Fars 857 million liters, Isfahan 817 million liters and Kerman 586.4 million liters.

National gasoline consumption reached 12.5 billion liters this summer. More than 5 billion liters were distributed in these five top-consuming provinces, representing approximately 40% of the country's total. Tehran Province alone accounted for about 15% of the national total, consuming over 1.884 billion liters, placing it first. Khorasan Razavi was the second-largest consumer with 869.5 million liters.

According to statistics from the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company, the country's average daily gasoline consumption this summer was 134.3 million liters. This represents an increase of approximately 5 million liters per day compared to the same period last year (, which had an average of 129.4 million liters. The highest single-day consumption record was set on Sept. 13, 2025, with 154.7 million liters consumed.

The average daily consumption for the months of Tir was 123.5 million liters, Mordad was 137.7 million liters, and Shahrivar was 141.7 million liters. This rising trend reflects a continuous increase in demand during the peak summer travel season. The growth is attributed not only to a rise in inter-city travel and widespread use of personal vehicles but also to the direct impact of official holidays and intra-city traffic.

Iran's current per capita gasoline consumption is 4 liters per day, which is higher than the global average of 3 liters per day. If the current consumption growth rate continues, the gasoline imbalance is projected to cost the country more than $16 billion annually by 2028. The average annual growth rate of gasoline consumption from 1979 to 2023 was about 5%, with a 10% growth over the past four years. Forecasts predict that if this trend continues, daily gasoline consumption will reach 170 million liters by 2028.
