Tehran Province tops national gasoline consumption

SHANA (Tehran) — Tehran province recorded the highest gasoline use in Iran during the summer of 1404, consuming more than 1.884 billion liters — about 15% of the country’s total consumption.

National gasoline consumption in the same period was estimated at 12.5 billion liters. Tehran, with a population of about 14.5 million, accounted for the largest share among provinces. Officials attributed the high demand not only to population density but also to summer travel, increased intercity traffic and the growing number of private vehicles.

The country’s average daily gasoline consumption this summer reached 134.3 million liters, up from 129.4 million liters in the summer of 1403, an increase of nearly 5 million liters. The highest daily record was set on Sept. 12, when consumption hit 154.7 million liters.

According to the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company, average daily use by month was 123.5 million liters in Tir, 137.7 million liters in Mordad and 141.7 million liters in Shahrivar, reflecting rising demand during the peak travel season. The growth was attributed not only to intercity travel and widespread private car use but also to official holidays and urban traffic.

Per capita gasoline consumption in Iran now stands at four liters per day, above the global average of three liters. If current trends continue, the gasoline supply-demand imbalance could cost the country more than $16 billion annually by 2028. Since the 1979 revolution, Iran’s gasoline use has grown an average of 5% annually, with a 10% increase in the past four years. Projections suggest daily consumption could reach 170 million liters by 2028.
