Iran touts oil sector gains: Exports up, idle capacity restored

SHANA (Tehran) – The deputy head of the Iranian Parliament's Energy Committee cited the most significant achievements of the Oil Ministry under the 14th administration as growth in oil exports, an improved national gas balance, the activation of private sector capacity, and the revival of idled and suspended capacities in the upstream and midstream oil and gas industry.

Farhad Shahraki commented on the Oil Ministry's main accomplishments: "Important achievements include growth in petroleum product exports, activating private sector capacity in the oil value chain, and improving the country's gas balance through increased production and reduced energy waste."

Regarding exports, he emphasized that despite international restrictions, the continued export of crude oil through market diversification, barter methods, and non-dollar channels is a strategic success that has positively impacted the country's foreign exchange balance. He stated that reviving idled and suspended capacities in the upstream and midstream oil and gas chain by relying on domestic resources and active energy diplomacy is another key achievement.

Halting the downturn in investment in shared fields

On the Oil Ministry's efforts to attract investment, the deputy committee head stated that during this period, despite continued sanctions, the ministry managed to halt the declining investment trend in shared oil fields. It reactivated projects such as South Pars Phase 11, the development of shared fields in West Karun, and plans for oil production maintenance and enhancement.

On the oil industry's main priorities, Shahraki said its strategic focus is on six key areas: developing shared fields and increasing the recovery factor, optimizing the national gas balance, capturing and economically utilizing flare gas, expanding natural gas storage capacity, completing the oil value chain with a focus on petro-refineries, and expanding energy diplomacy with a targeted export and investment attraction approach.

He stressed that the phased development of shared fields, prioritizing the West Karun, South Pars, and Caspian Sea regions, should be a top priority. He also noted that increasing the recovery factor from producing fields using gas, water, and steam injection technologies, along with other enhanced oil recovery methods, is a long-term technical and economic necessity.
