Iran’s oil opportunities: Gas pressure boosting stations

SHANA (Tehran) – Five sour gas pressure boosting station projects, aimed at collecting, pressurizing and transferring up to 108 million cubic meters per day of associated gas, will be introduced to investors at the Transformation in Investment and Development in Iran’s Upstream Oil and Gas event.

Today, energy serves as the lifeblood of the global economy. Iran, with its vast resources—including oil-associated gas—remains a key player in the global market. However, without advanced technological infrastructure, these resources cannot solidify their position in the world economy. Sour gas pressure boosting stations act as powerful hearts, pumping gas from southern wells to gas refineries.

Several high-value projects to collect, pressurize and transfer up to 108 million cubic meters per day of associated gas are on the agenda of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) These projects include one under the management of the Iranian Offshore Oil Co. and four within the operational scope of the Iranian Central Oil Fields Co. These opportunities not only enhance gas resource productivity but also open new avenues for domestic and foreign investment in Iran’s oil and gas sector.

Sour gas, containing hazardous components like hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, requires infrastructure capable of handling corrosion and toxicity risks. Sour gas pressure boosting stations differ from sweet gas stations in aspects such as corrosion-resistant materials, advanced safety equipment and specialized purification processes.

These stations employ advanced technologies designed to address sour gas challenges. Compressors—the core of these facilities—are corrosion-resistant turbo compressors capable of handling hydrogen sulfide-rich gas. Dehydration systems using solvents like glycol remove moisture and mitigate corrosion risks.

A critical design aspect of sour gas pressure boosting stations is the use of corrosion-resistant alloys, including nickel, chromium, stainless steel and titanium. These stations are not only essential for transporting associated gas to consumption hubs but also ensure national energy security. Disruptions in their operation could trigger economic and social crises.

Given its vast gas reserves, Iran can strengthen its global market role by developing this infrastructure. The new sour gas pressure boosting station projects, set to be introduced at the Transformation in Investment and Development event, represent hope for a brighter, more sustainable future in Iran’s oil and gas industry.

In today’s fast-paced world, facilities like sour gas pressure boosting stations serve as a bridge between the resource-rich south and the economic demands of northern Iran. Investing in this sector not only strengthens infrastructure and domestic production but also demonstrates Iran’s ability to attract capital and secure its global market position.

At the Transformation in Investment and Development event, the NIOC will present over 200 opportunities to large, medium and small investors under various contractual frameworks.
