Strategic studies essential for petchem industry development

SHANA (Tehran) – The CEO of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC) emphasized the need to diversify target markets and identify opportunities and challenges for the development of Iran’s petrochemical industry over the next 20 years.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Petrochemical Strategic Studies Office (Petrochemical House) on Sunday, Hassan Abbaszadeh highlighted the importance of establishing a research base to improve decision-making in the petrochemical sector.

He stated that analyzing challenges and opportunities in the development of the value chain, as well as strategies for attracting investment in the industry, requires detailed studies and research to determine the best path forward for the petrochemical industry.

Abbaszadeh pointed to the imbalance in the energy sector, noting that it impacts the maintenance, production, and sustainable development of petrochemical products. He stressed the need for further research on this issue.

The CEO identified one of the key research objectives in the petrochemical industry as ensuring a stable supply of feedstock to achieve an annual growth target of 8%. He explained that the main challenge for the industry is securing sustainable feedstock. The petrochemical industry has a capacity of 100 million tons, with 20% currently unused. This issue could be a focus of studies to ensure feedstock sustainability.

Abbaszadeh also emphasized the importance of analyzing international markets, particularly in India, China, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Africa, to identify required products and target countries. He called for detailed studies to understand market needs, existing capacities, and the diversification of target markets.

He described the carbon sector, especially flare gases, as a national priority requiring strategic studies at the Petrochemical House. He added that the NPC is working on a regional planning project to define downstream industries for each province.

Abbaszadeh stressed the importance of forming expert working groups and leveraging their experience to advance petrochemical goals and projects. He urged the immediate initiation of necessary studies to improve the state of the petrochemical industry in Iran.

Establishing Effective Mechanisms for Collaboration with Domestic and International Scientific Institutions

Mohammad-Sadeq Jokar, head of the Institute for International Energy Studies, said the institute aims to create an effective mechanism for collaboration with domestic and international scientific and academic institutions. He stated that the center is developing operational mechanisms to address issues such as pricing, media outreach, and developments in petrochemical systems.

Jokar noted that a policy-making council has been established to determine key topics and form research groups. These groups will examine issues such as price fluctuations and research needs, with their findings reported weekly and monthly to the Ministry of Petroleum.

He added that the center is also engaged in data modeling and forecasting energy demand in the country. It is working to obtain accurate market and media information through monitoring robots.

Jokar highlighted the center’s focus on future studies and analysis based on existing data. He said the center aims to create a network of think tanks and experts to support better and more effective decision-making in the petrochemical sector.
