Gas consumption in residential sector expected to reach 650 mcm

SHANA (Tehran) – The director of the National Gas Network Operations Control Center announced that with the arrival of new cold fronts, daily gas consumption in the residential, commercial, and small industrial sectors hit a record high of 600 million cubic meters on December 9.

According to Moslem Rahmani, out of the 860 million cubic meters of gas injected into the national pipeline network on Monday, approximately 72 percent—600 million cubic meters—was allocated to residential, commercial, and small industrial sectors. He noted that this is a significant figure.

Rahmani emphasized that the remaining gas must be allocated to large industries and power plants to ensure productive consumption.

He stressed that only through efficient gas management across all sectors can the benefits of this natural resource be distributed equitably nationwide.

Looking ahead, Rahmani stated that forecasts indicate gas consumption in the residential and commercial sectors could rise to 650 million cubic meters per day in the coming days due to colder temperatures.

“This level of consumption is a warning for all of us,” Rahmani said. He added that the high demand has already caused pressure drops in some key areas, including East Azerbaijan, Razavi Khorasan, South Khorasan, and Ardabil provinces.

He highlighted that addressing this issue requires collective effort and responsible consumption by all citizens.

Rahmani warned that if the upward consumption trend continues, northern provinces such as Mazandaran, Golestan, and North Khorasan could also experience gas pressure drops.

Effective management of gas consumption in other sectors, he said, is essential to prevent gas outages in remote villages and towns.

The director urged his colleagues across the country and citizens—particularly in the agricultural sector—to prioritize efficient gas use to maintain the stability of the gas network.

“For example, in greenhouses, adjusting burners and properly insulating structures can reduce gas consumption by at least 25 percent,” he noted.

Rahmani called for cooperation among all stakeholders to navigate this challenging period.

He stressed the importance of collective efforts to ensure minimal disruptions for citizens and to help the country weather the winter season.
