South Pars Gas Complex from 1998 to 2025

SHANA (Tehran) - The South Pars Gas Complex has processed and delivered more than 2.36 trillion cubic meters of natural gas to Iran’s national grid over the past 27 years, the company’s managing director said, marking the 27th anniversary of its founding.

Gholamabbas Hosseini told Shana that the South Pars Gas Complex, established on Oct. 20, 1998, as a subsidiary of the National Iranian Gas Company, was tasked with operating the onshore processing facilities for multiple phases of the South Pars gas field. The complex began its first official gas sweetening and production from Refinery No. 2 (Phases 2 and 3) in 2001.

“At that time, the complex received 50 million cubic meters of gas feed daily from the offshore platforms of the shared field, producing and sweetening about 45 million cubic meters of natural gas per day,” Hosseini said. “Refinery No. 2 also produced 80,000 barrels of gas condensate and 400 tons of sulfur daily.”

Daily feed of 650 mcm

Regarding the company’s total performance over the past 27 years, Hosseini said that from its establishment until the end of September 2025, the complex had received 2.79 trillion cubic meters of gas from offshore platforms, of which more than 2.36 trillion cubic meters were sweetened and delivered to national transmission pipelines.

He added that during the same period, condensate production exceeded 3.47 billion barrels, calling it “a major achievement contributing to the country’s economic growth.”

“The current daily feed capacity from offshore platforms is 650 million cubic meters,” Hosseini said. “Of that, more than 600 million cubic meters of natural gas are processed and transferred to the national network each day.”

He added that the complex’s daily output also includes 780,000 barrels of condensate, 15,000 tons of ethane, 15,000 tons of propane, 10,000 tons of butane, and 2,500 tons of sulfur — all of which significantly contribute to foreign exchange revenue and industrial supply.

According to Hosseini, the total ethane delivered to Jam, Morvarid, Kavian, and Arya Sasol petrochemical plants since the complex’s establishment has exceeded 35.6 million tons, generating substantial foreign exchange revenue for Iran.

He noted that more than 585 million barrels of gas condensate have been sent to Borzouyeh Petrochemical Plant and over 952 million barrels to the Persian Gulf Star Refinery, both vital to the nation’s gasoline production. During the same period, more than 53 billion cubic meters of gas feed were supplied to Pars, Bushehr, and Kangan Petrorefinery complexes.

The South Pars Gas Complex operates in two main industrial sites along the Persian Gulf coast in Bushehr Province — Asaluyeh and Kangan. Beyond gas production, Hosseini emphasized the company’s strong commitment to social responsibility initiatives in areas such as culture, education, health, employment, and environmental protection.

Site One, located in Asaluyeh, includes Refineries 1 through 8, while Site Two in Kangan houses Refineries 9 through 13. Together, the two sites operate 24 active gas phases.
