According to the company, CEO Nasrollah Zarei said Azadegan, Iran’s largest shared oil field, plays a strategic role in safeguarding national interests, boosting production and improving reservoir recovery rates. He said the second phase of development has therefore been placed among the company’s top priorities.
Zarei said complementary studies, tendering processes, equipment procurement and regulatory approvals are being carried out simultaneously to ensure rapid and efficient project execution.
Under the first stage of the plan, 40 electric submersible pumps (ESPs) will be installed, 10 production wells will be repaired, and a comprehensive well-stimulation program will be implemented. These measures are expected to raise crude oil production by approximately 40,000 barrels per day within 18 months.
The investment required for this phase is estimated at about $550 million. Zarei said financing will be secured through domestic resources and cooperation with the country’s banking sector. He added that the project will maximize the use of Iranian contractors and manufacturers to accelerate implementation.
For the first time on a large scale at the Azadegan field, artificial lift systems and ESP technology will be deployed. Zarei said the technology will not only increase production but also help sustain output and improve reservoir performance over the long term.
He emphasized that relying on domestic technical and industrial capabilities remains a central policy of the project. Most of the required equipment, including casing pipes, wellhead equipment and other strategic components, will be supplied by Iranian manufacturers, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and lowering foreign exchange costs.
Zarei also highlighted the importance of environmental compliance, noting the field’s proximity to the Hour Al-Azim wetland. He said all operations will adhere to environmental standards, including the use of cluster drilling techniques, waste management measures and continuous environmental monitoring.
He stressed that the Azadegan development project is not solely aimed at increasing production but is part of Iran’s broader strategy to optimize recovery from shared reservoirs and enhance the recovery factor of national hydrocarbon reserves. Increased production and recovery rates at the field are expected to generate significant economic value for the country.
“With the launch of Phase 2 operations at Azadegan, a new chapter has begun in the development of the West Karoun oil fields,” Zarei said. “Relying on the expertise of Iranian specialists, domestic capabilities and cooperation with local contractors and manufacturers, we are confident this project will become one of the oil industry’s major success stories in the years ahead.”
