EV charging network expanded with 27 stations now operational

SHANA (Tehran) – Iran put 27 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations into operation at fuel stations across the country, according to the CEO of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC). He also announced that the company has issued 223 permits for the construction of EV charging stations at fuel stations since the beginning of the Iranian year 1404.

Mohamad-Sadeq Azimifar said the initiative follows a resolution adopted by the Economic Council in February 2025 (Bahman 1403). Under the new policy, all urban and intercity fuel stations seeking new or renewed operating licenses from the start of 1404 must allocate space for at least one single-nozzle EV charging station. Technical, safety, and standardization requirements have been developed with the participation of relevant stakeholders, while feasibility studies and investor engagement have also been completed.

Azimifar noted that all applicants can obtain permits to build EV charging stations through Iran’s National Licensing Portal. He expressed optimism that the continued rollout of charging infrastructure will increase the share of electric mobility in the country's transportation sector.

In addition to expanding charging infrastructure, NIORDC has signed an agreement to replace 20,000 aging gasoline-powered commercial motorcycles operating in Tehran with electric motorcycles.

He added that the company is also committed to electrifying Iran’s public transportation fleet. A draft agreement to replace 3,200 gasoline-powered motorcycles with electric models was finalized in February 2026 (Bahman 1404) and is currently awaiting review and approval by the Organization for Energy Optimization and Strategic Management in accordance with its legal responsibilities.
