Gov’t seeks fuel savings without hurting livelihoods

SHANA (Tehran) – First vice president said the government is seeking to manage gasoline consumption in a way that protects household livelihoods while addressing the country’s economic realities and rising energy challenges.

According to the office of Vice President Mohammadreza Aref, the issue of fuel consumption and gasoline pricing was reviewed Sunday during a meeting of the government’s Economic Coordination HQ chaired by Aref.

Officials discussed a range of pricing and non-pricing reform scenarios aimed at reducing fuel consumption and limiting the need for gasoline imports.

Aref said the government’s strategy is focused on managing gasoline consumption to achieve greater self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imports. He stressed that any decisions must avoid harming people’s livelihoods while also taking into account the country’s economic conditions and recent developments.

He also warned officials against making personal comments about gasoline management plans before expert reviews are completed, saying unauthorized remarks could create unnecessary public concern and instability.

“First, expert opinions must be fully examined, and then a final conclusion should be reached after considering all aspects of the issue,” Aref said.

The vice president added that the government’s broader energy strategy centers on reducing household energy consumption through public cooperation in order to ensure stable energy supplies for industries.

He said disruptions to production could lead to unemployment and wider economic problems, making it essential to secure energy for key sectors including industry, petrochemicals and agriculture.

During the meeting, officials also reviewed proposals aimed at increasing household energy savings while ensuring sufficient energy supplies for industrial and productive sectors.

The government said final decisions will be announced and implemented after expert assessments and policy reviews are completed.
