Over 165 bcm of sweet gas injected from South Pars refineries

SHANA (Tehran) – The managing director of the South Pars Gas Complex said 165.5 billion cubic meters of sweet gas were injected into Iran’s national grid from the start of the current year through Feb. 3, adding that all 13 refineries in the complex are fully prepared to maintain energy stability during peak winter demand.

Gholamabbas Hosseini said that through accurate demand forecasting and extensive technical and operational measures, the South Pars Gas Complex ensured stable gas production and transmission to the national grid during the recent cold spell and peak winter consumption.

He said the achievement reflects round-the-clock efforts by specialists and staff, the implementation of innovative operational plans, precise technical inspections, timely and high-quality overhauls, and full reliance on domestically manufactured equipment. These measures, he said, have improved the alignment of production with seasonal demand and helped maintain stable pressure across the gas network.

Overhauls completed with minimal downtime

Hosseini said a series of strategic actions were carried out during refinery overhauls this year, including the refurbishment and modernization of critical process equipment, repair and replacement of turbocompressors, upgrades to control and instrumentation systems, optimization of gas sweetening units, improved reliability of internal transmission lines, removal of operational bottlenecks, and the implementation of safety and production stability projects.

He said the successful completion of overhauls with minimal downtime increased equipment reliability and unit availability, enabling maximum utilization of the 13 active South Pars refineries and rapid response to rising gas demand during cold weather.

Hosseini said the refineries operate at full capacity and maintain equipment in optimal condition, remaining continuously ready for stable gas production and delivery to the national grid. He added that processing units, including gas sweetening and outlet pressure boosting, are monitored daily by experts to ensure safe transmission and steady production.

More than 600 mcm injected daily

Hosseini said that in the previous Iranian year, 196 billion cubic meters of sweet gas were injected into the national grid. From the start of the current year through Feb. 3, more than 165.5 billion cubic meters of gas were processed and delivered, with recent daily averages exceeding 600 million cubic meters injected into the national pipelines.

He said South Pars refineries are operating at full capacity despite a sharp rise in winter consumption and supply more than 75 percent of the country’s gas needs. That share, he said, underscores the complex’s strategic role in preventing energy imbalances and maintaining the stability of the national network during critical conditions.

Hosseini said the complex’s performance in managing the cold wave, completing overhauls and sustaining production demonstrates its strong technical, managerial and operational capabilities, further cementing its position as the backbone of Iran’s gas supply and a key pillar of national energy security.

Stable gas supply key to energy security

Hosseini said maintaining a stable gas supply in winter is not only essential for keeping homes warm and ensuring public comfort, but also a cornerstone of national energy security. He added that the South Pars Gas Complex plays a vital role in supplying feedstock to petrochemical and refining facilities, including the Persian Gulf Star Refinery, supporting crude processing, gasoline production and petrochemical output.

Drawing on recent years’ experience, Hosseini said precise management of periodic maintenance, full readiness for demand surges, and investment in equipment, human resources and modern technologies ensure uninterrupted gas production during peak consumption. He said effective planning, coordination between operational and support units, and a focus on equipment self-sufficiency and localization of key components have also been critical to the industry’s success.
