OTTAWA _ Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty named two new directors to the Canada Pension Plan investment board on Tuesday.

Flaherty appointed Methanex (TSX:MX) chairman Pierre Choquette and Michael Goldberg, former chief academic officer of Universitas 21 Global, an international network of 20 universities.

The board is responsible for investing CPP investment funds and operates at arm´s length from governments.

A fall of stock markets amid a widespread credit crisis shrank the Canada Pension Plan fund´s assets by 1.6 per cent in its third quarter, the first decline in five years.

The fund said assets for the October-December period slipped to $119.4 billion from $121.3 billion at the end of the second quarter.
