Fair energy transition requires producers-consumers cooperation

SHANA (Doha) – Khalifa Rajab Abdulsadek, Libya’s minister of oil and gas and president of the 27th Ministerial Meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), said Thursday that expanding cooperation between gas producers and consumers is essential to achieving a fair and sustainable energy transition.

He said the GECF’s role in shaping the global energy outlook requires “smart leadership and decisions based on shared interests.”

Speaking at the opening of the 27th GECF ministerial meeting in Doha, Abdulsadek emphasized the need for unity among member countries to ensure equitable access to sustainable energy. “This meeting provides an opportunity for dialogue and exchange of ideas among member states to reach a common understanding on the path toward sustainable energy development,” he said.

Expressing pride in Libya’s presidency of the GECF in 2025, Abdulsadek welcomed newly appointed ministers to the forum and said the meeting reflects “the commitment of gas-producing nations to advancing common goals on the global stage.”

Referring to the current state of world affairs, he noted that the meeting takes place “at a time when the world faces multiple political and humanitarian challenges,” adding that “one-dimensional approaches only worsen the crises we aim to solve.”

Citing global energy forecasts, Abdulsadek said that by 2050, fossil fuels are expected to still meet half of the world’s energy demand. “Under current conditions, production of these resources requires a just transition and greater investment in the energy sector,” he said.

Natural gas currently accounts for about 26% of global energy consumption, Abdulsadek said, stressing the importance of boosting investment in the sector to sustain production and support global sustainable development.

He reiterated that cooperation between gas producers and consumers is vital and that the GECF must exercise intelligent leadership guided by mutual interests.

“Increasing the use of renewable energy and enhancing energy infrastructure will pave the way for sustainable development and secure energy supply worldwide,” Abdulsadek concluded.
