GECF secretary-general: Golden age of natural gas is ahead

SHANA (Doha) – The Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) said global gas consumption reached a record high in 2024 and is expected to grow by about 6% this year, marking the beginning of the “golden age of natural gas.”

Mohammed Hamel, speaking Thursday at the 27th GECF Ministerial Meeting, emphasized the vital role of natural gas in the global energy transition. “The world is currently in need of an energy transition, and in this regard, natural gas stands as a clean, flexible, and reliable source that enhances global energy security,” he said.

Hamel highlighted gas’s contribution beyond the energy sector, noting its importance to food security. “Natural gas not only supplies energy but also plays a key role in agriculture through its use in fertilizer production,” he added.

The GECF chief said serving in this international organization is a great honor and pride. He added that the forum has successfully elevated the global standing of natural gas to the level it deserves.

Hamel concluded by wishing peace and stability for all nations.
