Iran, Russia to boost cooperation in energy technology

SHANA (Tehran) – Iran’s deputy oil minister said Iranian specialists and companies possess expertise in many fields that can be shared with Russian counterparts, while Iranian firms also stand to benefit from Russian technologies in key areas.

According to IRNA, Omid Shakeri made the remarks Thursday, on the sidelines of the 8th Russian Energy Week International Forum in Moscow. “In addition to attending the event’s programs, we held bilateral meetings with Russian representatives, aiming to enhance the level of cooperation between the two sides,” he said.

Shakeri, who heads the Iranian side of the Iran-Russia Joint Economic Cooperation Commission, noted that ongoing partnerships between Iranian and Russian companies are progressing well. “Both we and the Russian side believe that the level of cooperation can be further increased,” he added.

 Expanding oil cooperation

Shakeri, deputy oil minister for engineering, research, and technology, said he met with Russia’s deputy energy minister and the head of the Russian delegation to the joint commission to discuss ways to strengthen collaboration. “Both sides are eager to achieve this goal, especially as Western sanctions on Iran and Russia have brought the two countries closer,” he said.

He added that the leadership of both nations is determined to ensure that cooperation produces tangible results, including supporting growth and development in the oil industry.

“Iran and Russia have already signed several promising contracts for oil field development, and their implementation is proceeding well,” Shakeri said. “In our recent talks, we also discussed some contracts that may face operational challenges, as well as proposals for new agreements.”

 Readiness for technology transfer

Shakeri emphasized that the two countries’ cooperation is expected not only to boost Iran’s oil and gas output but also to facilitate mutual technology exchange. “Iranian specialists and companies have capabilities in many areas that can be transferred to the Russian side, while Iranian firms will benefit from Russian technologies where needed,” he said.

The 8th Russian Energy Week International Forum opened Wednesday, Oct. 15, in Moscow with representatives from about 100 countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, and will continue for three days.
