Summer gasoline demand in Iran surges to highest level in years

SHANA (Tehran) – Iran’s gasoline consumption hit a record high this summer, totaling about 12.5 billion liters, with an average daily use of 134.3 million liters, according to the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company.

Figures show that consumption began in Tir at 123.5 million liters a day, climbed 12% in Mordad to 137.7 million liters, and peaked in Shahrivar at 141.7 million liters. The highest single-day record was set on Sept. 13 (Shahrivar 22 on the Iranian calendar) with 154.7 million liters consumed.

The company reported that daily consumption surged during public holidays and at the end of each month. Tir’s peak days were July 19 and 22, with 139 million and 146 million liters used, respectively. In Mordad, demand spiked to 148.1 million liters on Aug. 21 and 152 million liters on Aug. 22. In Shahrivar, as summer holidays began, daily consumption soared to 149.2 million, 149.6 million, and 154.7 million liters on Sept. 6, 9, and 13.

Compared with the summer of 2024, when average daily use was 129.4 million liters, demand rose by nearly 5 million liters a day this year. Analysts say the surge reflects increased intercity travel, heavy reliance on private cars, urban traffic, and the impact of holidays.

The record consumption highlights mounting pressure on the country’s fuel supply and distribution capacity. Officials warn that without reforms, rising demand could carry significant economic consequences. Experts point to the need for tighter energy planning, greater investment in public transportation, improved vehicle efficiency, and stronger public awareness to curb unnecessary consumption.

The summer 2025 figures, analysts say, not only capture one of the highest gasoline use levels in recent years but also serve as a warning sign for policymakers to address structural inefficiencies in fuel demand management.
