Power plants lead in gas consumption: Nearly 2 bcm in one week

SHANA (Tehran) – Statistics show that from May 24 to 30, 2025, gas consumption by power plants was significantly higher than that of major industries and households, reaching nearly 2 billion cubic meters (bcm).

During this period, Iran’s total natural gas consumption across three main sectors—power plants, major industries, and residential, commercial, and small industrial consumers—was recorded at about 4.4 bcm. Power plants consumed over 1.94 bcm, major industries used around 1.2 bcm, and the residential, commercial, and small industrial sectors accounted for approximately 1.3 bcm.

On May 24, power plants consumed 248.38 mcm of gas, while major industries used 166.97 mcm, and the residential, commercial, and small industrial sectors consumed 193.05 mcm. In total, over 608 mcm of gas were allocated to these three sectors that day.

Gas delivery to power plants increased on May 25, with consumption rising to 280.54 mcm. Major industries saw a slight increase, using 168.25 mcm, while residential and commercial consumption rose to 196.05 mcm. This growth across all sectors reflects rising temperatures and increased energy demand. Total gas consumption for the three sectors reached 644.84 mcm, the highest single-day figure in the past week.

Peak power plant consumption: Over 285 mcm

The highest gas consumption by power plants during the week occurred on May 26, reaching 285.22 mcm. That same day, major industries used 167.56 mcm, while residential, commercial, and small industrial consumption dropped to 178.51 mcm. Total consumption for the three sectors was 631.29 mcm.

On May 27, power plant consumption slightly decreased to 283.99 mcm. Major industries saw an increase to 169.01 mcm, while residential, commercial, and small industrial use rose to 183.56 mcm. Total gas consumption reached 636.56 mcm.

On May 28, power plants consumed 280.71 mcm, major industries used 169.52 mcm, and the residential, commercial, and small industrial sectors accounted for 184.84 mcm. Total consumption surpassed 635 mcm.

Data from Mmay 29 shows power plants used 282.12 mcm, while major industries consumed 166.56 mcm and residential, commercial, and small industrial consumption dropped to 176.02 mcm. Total gas use exceeded 624 mcm.

The week ended on May 30 with power plants consuming 281.35 mcm, major industries using 169.13 mcm, and the residential, commercial, and small industrial sectors at 165.86 mcm. This trend indicates relative stability in power plant consumption and a continued decline in household use. Total gas consumption that day was about 616 mcm.

Gas consumption data from May 24 to 30, 2025, reveals that power plants, with consistently high usage, were the largest gas consumers during this period. In contrast, residential and commercial consumption fluctuated significantly, likely due to weather conditions and consumer behavior. Major industries showed relatively stable but lower consumption levels compared to power plants.
