Digital Public Relations: A prerequisite for professional public opinion management

SHANA (Tehran) – The deputy oil minister for gas affairs emphasized the strategic role of public relations in accurately representing the realities of the gas industry, stressing the need for digital tools, precise information, and a professional approach in organizational communications.

Saeid Tavakoli speaking Sunday at a ceremony honoring World Communications and Public Relations Day, attended by PR and IT staff, acknowledged the relentless efforts of PR teams over the past year. He stated, "Last winter, the National Iranian Gas Company’s PR unit operated like an active field team, playing a major role in managing the media landscape with professional performance."

Highlighting the difficulty of maintaining morale and fostering hope amid societal distrust and digital pressures, he said, "Dear colleagues, you successfully reflected the organization’s achievements in this environment, preventing negative narratives from overshadowing your work."

Noting the cost-effective yet high-impact performance of the company’s PR department, Tavakoli added, "Unlike some entities that counter psychological warfare with high costs and unprofessional tactics, the National Iranian Gas Company has executed targeted, effective communications within a professional framework and limited resources."

Accurate information: The foundation of effective communications

Tavakoli described PR as one of the company’s most vital support units, noting its precise, timely actions. He stressed the importance of verified data as the backbone of successful organizational communications, stating, "Reliable information must be accessible to analysts, data processors, and regularly updated to keep all team members informed and confident in project progress."

He likened proper information flow to a transmitter-receiver system: "Messages must be accurately encoded, sent, and received to retain meaning. Without precise data, miscommunication erodes trust."

 Representing reality through digital tools

Tavakoli highlighted natural gas’s dominance in Iran’s energy mix, with 74% of the fuel portfolio and 85% of power plants gas-reliant—"a global rarity."

He called transparent software and digital PR tools essential, stating, "PR must leverage systems providing a company-wide overview to enhance realistic performance representation." Managing data for 95% gas network coverage, he noted, is no small feat.

"This isn’t just HQ’s duty but a full chain from hardware to data management," he said, warning against fixating on shortcomings over opportunities.

Women: Half of society’s influential human capital

Tavakoli urged a digital shift in PR: "The world is moving toward digital PR. We must modernize to build trust. Women—capable, intelligent, and decisive—make up over 50% of the population and must be central to organizational planning."

Prioritizing public trust, he concluded, "Transparency and honesty are key. Timely, accurate information fosters trust—beneficial for both the company’s brand and your own credibility."
