Hassan Mousavi stated that of the 849 million cubic meters of natural gas delivered to the national grid on Tuesday, 655 million cubic meters—77%—were consumed by residential, commercial, and small industrial sectors.
“Despite colder weather in the ninth month of the current Iranian year compared to last year, natural gas consumption in these sectors has increased by 21% compared to the same day last year,” Mousavi said.
Following a drop in temperatures and forecasts of further cooling, President Masoud Pezeshkian, Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad, and other officials urged citizens to join the “2 Degrees Less” campaign through video and written messages. The campaign encourages reducing heating usage to optimize gas consumption and ensure sufficient fuel for the winter.
The public’s participation in this initiative has had a positive impact, reducing gas consumption in residential, commercial, and small industrial sectors from 671 million cubic meters on Monday to 655 million cubic meters on Tuesday.
Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad also highlighted public cooperation during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday. “Thankfully, citizens have shown great support. In recent days, we’ve observed a decrease in residential and commercial consumption. While we had projected daily residential consumption to rise to about 670 million cubic meters, the public’s cooperation has reduced this by 35 to 40 million cubic meters per day,” Paknejad said.
Simple measures such as maintaining indoor temperatures between 18°C and 21°C, wearing season-appropriate clothing, minimizing the use of heating systems, using thick curtains, sealing open spaces, and turning off heating in unused rooms can maximize gas savings and ensure equitable access to this vital resource for all citizens across the country.
Additionally, citizens are encouraged to report issues such as illegal gas connections, theft, misuse of heating systems in open spaces, or heating empty properties via the national hotline at 194. These reports will help the National Iranian Gas Company address wasteful practices promptly.
