Natural Gas Makes Up 70% of Energy Basket

SHANA (Tehran) – The CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Saeed Tavakoli has said that the share of natural gas in the country’s energy basket is 70%.

Speaking at the 39th meeting of the public relations heads of the gas industry, he also said that natural gas meets 83 percent of power plants' needs to fuel.

NIGC’s head emphasized the necessity for a cross-sectoral perspective on energy, especially as the country approaches the cold season, stating that NIGC as a midstream entity and according to its inherent duties, is responsible for maintaining a steady supply of gas in the country, with the primary priority being the sustained gas supply for households, particularly during the cold season.

He added that in the summer of 1403 (2024), NIGC cooperated maximally with the power sector, delaying some of the major repairs of gas processing plants to meet the needs of power plants.

According to him, 83% of the fuel basket required for the power sector is provided by gas, noting that no other country uses such a volume of natural gas in its power sector.

Tavakoli added that the natural gas industry is a driving force for production and development, at the forefront of the economic war, and acts with national interests in mind, disregarding sectoral and political considerations to maximally supply gas needed by all consumers in industrial, service, household, and other sectors.

Tavakoli emphasized the need to improve the efficiency of facilities and equipment for optimal consumption management, stating that consumption efficiency is a cross-sector issue, with the law assigning responsibility to thirteen different bodies.
