Raeisi calls for OPEC members’ unity to foil Western plot to create divisions

SHANA (Tehran) – Iran’s president held talks with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries secretary general here on Saturday, calling for unity among OPEC member states to foil some Western countries’ plot to create divisions.

In a meeting with OPEC chief Haitham Al Ghais, also attended by Iran’s Oil Minister Javad Owji, President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi said “constructive” cooperation among the group’s members is pivotal to the international organization’s success.

“Iran has all the time had constructive cooperation with the organization and is determined to promote its cooperation,” underlined Raeisi.

OPEC has been established to protect oil producers’ rights and prohibit discrimination against them, said the president, expressing hope that the organization [under Al Ghais] will ease tensions and calm will prevail in the oil market.

OPEC chief lauds Iran ‘effective’ cooperation

The visiting OPEC secretary general praised Iran’s “effective” and “constructive” cooperation with the organization and said, “Iran has always helped at the ministerial and technical meetings foster unity among OPEC members.”

Touching upon the status quo of the international oil market, Al Ghais expressed hope that Iran’s protection and cooperation will help calm the market.
