OPEC Convenes to Elect New Sec. Gen.

TEHRAN (Shana) -- The special meeting of the Conference of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) began a few minutes ago with the aim of electing a new Secretary General for the Organization.

13 OPEC members will elect the 24th Secretary General of the Organization at their special meeting today, Monday, January 3.

OPEC members failed to elect a secretary-general at their 182nd meeting on December 1, 2021.

Haitham al-Ghais, Kuwait’s former OPEC governor, is the only candidate for the organization’s top post.

Al-Ghais is to replace Nigerian Sanusi Barkindo, whose is due to step down at the end of July next year.

Born in 1944, Mr. Barkindo took OPEC’s top job in mid-2016 and was granted a second three-year term in 2019.
