The reservoir adds 2.2b barrels to Iran’s oil recovery capacity by considering a 10 percent recovery rate in it.

In keeping with past explorations in the area, a total of 53.3 billion barrels of oil is entrapped in Namavaran Reservoir.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced the discovery on Sunday in a meeting with the people of Yazd. Also, Iranian Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zangeneh seconded the president’s statement the following day to reporters in Tehran.

Mr. Zangeneh said that there was a possibility that the estimated capacity of reservoir’s oil in place (OIP) could increase further. Moreover, the director of NIOC’s exploration department said exploration activities were to continue in the field and more exploration wells were to be spudded in the future.

Namavaran Reservoir, covering 2,400 square kilometers, straddles some 130 km in length and 50 km in width and is located south and west of the southwestern city of Ahwaz. It is also on both sides of the Karoon River, and is situated between Mansouri, Abteymour, Susangerd, Jofeir, Sepehr and Darkhowin oilfields.

This is the second largest oilfield discovered in Iran following Asmari Oil Layer in Gachsaran with 54 billion barrels of oil in place.

Namavaran: 2nd Largest Oil Reservoir in Iran

TEHRAN (Shana) -- Experts at the National Iranian Oil Company’s exploration department have discovered a new oil reservoir in Khuzestan Province, which holds 22 billion barrels of crude oil in place.
