Three people died and several were injured after an explosion in a 140,000-barrel-a-day refinery owned by oil firm Repsol in the Spanish city of Puertollano on Thursday, government officials said.

"We can confirm that three people died in the accident and between six and eight are believed to be injured," Jose Manuel Martinez, energy and industry director general in the region of Castilla-La Mancha, told Reuters by telephone. The mayor of Puertollano in central Spain also confirmed the death toll to reporters. A company spokesman said the fire caused by the explosion was confined to one area of the refinery, but the company could not say if it would mean activity at the plant would be suspended.
